🌿Let’s Grow: Children’s Gardening Course
Taught by the Camas/Washougal Garden Club President, Diana Hogg, this 6-week gardening program introduces children to the wonders of plants, pollinators, and growing food through hands-on activities, observation, and creative expression.
Week 1: What is a garden? – Students will ponder the meaning of a garden. They will explore the different types of gardens through stories and photographs and personal experience. They will make garden art to take home to their own garden, and start their own garden journal.
Week 2: Butterflies & Life Cycles – The class will explore the life stages of butterflies, and watch caterpillars become butterflies over time with an in class butterfly garden. They will also learn which plants are best for the butterfly life cycle
Week 3: Pollinators – Students discover the importance of pollinators. Learn about the many different types of pollinators, various types of pollinating plants and how pollinating happens.
Week 4: Seeds & Plant Basics – Children learn what plants need to grow, explore the life cycle of a seed and start their own seedlings to take home and tend to its growth.
Week 5: Growing a food garden –Students will learn about the many different types of food that we can grow in our own gardens. The parts of a plant that are edible and the basics of tending to a vegetable garden. They will also participate in making a salad to share for a snack.
Week 6: Celebration & Stewardship – The course ends with acts of kindness in the garden. How does the garden help us and the people around us? There will be a grand releasing of the butterflies to celebrate the end of the course.
Throughout the course, students will keep a garden journal to track plant growth, reflect on their experiences, and record observations of the gardens in their neighborhoods. By the end of the course, children will gain a deeper appreciation for how seeds become food and flowers, how pollinators support life, and how they can help care for gardens and nature.
